Not every police or military K9 is adopted by their handler after retirement or removal from service. Many of these highly trained dogs struggle to transition into life as family pets — yet their drive to serve never fades.
10-42 K9 Inc. provides these heroes with a second career in life-saving Search & Rescue (SAR) operations. These dogs once served alongside our troops, safeguarded critical infrastructure, & served our communities with unwavering loyalty. We believe they deserve a retirement that honors that same dedication — one where their exceptional skills continue to save lives. Through specialized retraining & certification, we prepare retired Military Working Dogs (MWDs) & Law Enforcement K9s to serve again — this time, finding the lost, missing, or deceased.
In addition, 10-42 K9 Inc. offers a new path for dogs that did not fully complete their initial MWD or law enforcement training, ensuring they, too, can fulfill their calling as working dogs in vital Search and Rescue roles.
K9 Odin was a dual-purpose Police K9, nationally accredited by the United States Police Canine Association (USPCA) for both narcotics detection and apprehension. His strength, intelligence, and unwavering dedication embodied everything a working K9 stands for — and his story became the driving force behind the creation of 10-42 K9 Inc.
Odin’s journey began in Germany in 2019, where — like generations of his bloodline before him — he was bred with a purpose. From birth, his path was one of service, carrying forward a proud legacy of courage and loyalty. As a young pup, he traveled to the United States to begin his training, ultimately serving as a Police K9 in Kentucky. There, he protected his community with distinction and devotion — until his story took a tragic turn.
In 2023, the Pennsylvania SPCA Law Enforcement Division rescued Odin and 28 other K9s from what was supposed to be a “Haven for Heroes.” The reality was far from it. Following a state investigation, multiple dogs were seized from K9 Hero Haven and its operator, Ann Gibbs, due to severe neglect. The animals — all former law enforcement, military, or contract working dogs — were found in deplorable conditions: emaciated, sick, and confined in kennels caked with waste.
My wife and I adopted & tried to heal one of these dogs, a male German Shepherd who was part of the second group seized, and his story is a powerful and painful reminder of why organizations like ours are essential.
Beginning in early 2026, 10-42 K9 Inc. will expand its operational capabilities to include Urban Search and Rescue (USAR), K9 Search and Rescue, and disaster response. These enhancements will enable our teams to deploy statewide throughout Pennsylvania and provide mutual aid support to surrounding regions when needed.
Our personnel train to national standards, operating in coordination with emergency management agencies, law enforcement, and partner SAR organizations. Together, we respond to a wide range of missions — from missing persons and disaster recovery to large-scale emergency deployments.
We are proud members of the National Association for Search and Rescue (NASAR) and are committed to upholding the highest standards of professionalism, readiness, and service.
